Your Skill Trinket holds 31 skills laid out on a grid of hexagons. You level up every 11 experience and each level gives one point to spend. Points come slowly and it’s easy to miss a steady source of experience, so plan before you spend. Tick each skill as you unlock it.

Getting the Skill Trinket

Nalin registers your Skill Trinket at Practical Practice.CozyGameSpace · 25:35 · CC BY 3.0
  1. Visit Nalin at Practical Practice in Wisk on your first day and say you study at the Etchery. Nalin registers a Skill Trinket in your name, and from then on the skills tab of the menu shows the tree and your free points.

How the tree works

The Abilities page: hover a hexagon to read what it does.CozyGameSpace · 26:05 · CC BY 3.0
  1. The rules:
    1. Three hexagons are open from the start: Mana Enrichment, Potionwork Proficiency and Seed Gatherer.
    2. Unlocking a hexagon opens the ones touching it. Hover over any hexagon to read its name and description.
    3. Every skill costs one point, and unlocks are permanent — you can’t get a point back.
    4. Some skills appear more than once: there are three Mana Enrichment, three Potionwork Proficiency and three Carpentry hexagons, and their effects stack.
    5. Four hexagons are hidden and show as Hidden Ability until a quest reveals them (see Hidden skills below).
    6. Light Bearer and Swift Witch can be switched off by clicking their hexagon once unlocked.

Earning experience

The Bathhouse: a dip once a day is worth 1 experience.Nookrium · 37:35 · CC BY 3.0
  1. Every 11 experience is a level and a skill point. Unlocking all 31 skills takes 341 experience.
SourceExperience
Finishing a quest3 or 5 each — about 170 in all
A new star practising a potion1 per star, up to 5 per potion
A new star practising a song1 per star, 2 per song
The Bathhouse1 a day

  1. Practise every potion and song to full stars: the 14 potion recipes are worth up to 70 experience and the songs about 30 more (see Potions and Songs & spells).
  2. Repairing shrines is worth more experience than destroying them: each repaired Ancient Shrine gives 2. Destroying one for Gary gives no experience but raises your maximum mana by 50.

Hidden skills

  1. Four hexagons stay hidden until a quest reveals them. Until then they show as Hidden Ability and can’t be unlocked even if you own a neighbouring hexagon. Once revealed, they’re available the next time you open the tree.
SkillHow to reveal it
Wind WielderGrow the colossal pumpkin, climb its vine and talk to the Cloud Shepherd (“The Colossal Pumpkin Contest”).
Flower FarmerReceive Gloria Marywild’s blessing in “Ghost Treasure”. If you lie to Ivarice about the moonstone, Gloria won’t give it to you (see Farming).
Mole StrengthFinish “Worms for Moles” for the Giant Mole (see Villagers).
ApothecaryFinish “The Potionmaster’s Ingredients”.

A skill most divers should skip

What to unlock first

  1. Mana is the first thing you run short of — every Song of Tilling and Rain Dance eats into it — so early points are best spent on more mana or on saving money.
  2. A good opening:
    1. Mana Enrichment (starting hexagon): +100 mana straight away.
    2. Seed Collective: free seeds twice a season for the rest of the year.
    3. Swift Witch through Seed Gatherer, Carpentry and Friend of Crows: four points for 25% faster movement, a daily gift from the crows, better seed returns and your first Carpentry level.
    4. Potionwork Proficiency and Esteemed Baker, next to Seed Collective: +40% on food sales and easier potion scores.
    5. The other two Mana Enrichment hexagons whenever you want to till more plots than your mana allows.
  3. After that, follow your play style. Fishing: Song of the Sea, Treasure Finder and Fishmonger. Potions: all three Potionwork Proficiency and Apothecary. Farming: Farm Merchant, Raindancer and Flower Farmer. If you top up mana by eating baked goods, Baker’s Touch (next to Mana Enrichment) doubles what they give for a single point.

Arch Witch

  1. The Arch Witch achievement unlocks when you have all 31 skills. That means 341 experience and all four hidden skills — so you need to finish “Ghost Treasure” without lying to Ivarice, “Worms for Moles”, “The Potionmaster’s Ingredients” and the colossal pumpkin.
  2. A full first year gives roughly 310 experience if you finish every quest, perfect every potion and song, repair the shrines and use every sand pile. Daily Bathhouse visits make up the rest if you go on most of the days it’s open.
