Woods, fields and beaches are full of free ingredients — mushrooms, herbs, flowers, shellfish and wild berries that grow back after you pick them. This page covers how they regrow, their seasons, where to find them and which ones are worth the walk. Bugs, diving, sand piles, shrines and other secrets are on the Collectibles page. Tick each plant the first time you pick it.

How foraging works

  1. Walk up to a plant, mushroom or shell and interact to pick it up. Only Cut Grass needs a tool (the Scythe). Everything goes to your inventory and sells at the Magic Well or any shop for its listed price. Many mushrooms and herbs restore mana raw, and more once baked (see Recipes).
  2. Regrowth. Every species has fixed spots. A picked spot stays empty for a few days: 3 for herbs, flowers and roots such as Dread Sorrel, Gloomroot and Ruby Bells; 4 for Morel and Pixie Cup; 6 for most mushrooms; and 7 for the slowest, Wild Thyme and Wild Mint.
  3. Once that time is up the spot *can* come back — but not every ready spot does. Each morning the game picks some at random until it reaches a set share for that species:
Share of spots out at oncePlants
AllFeathered Shroom, Fiddlehead, Sorrowspore and Cut Grass
85%Ruby Bells
75%Every other mushroom, herb, flower and root
60%Dandelion and Wild Leeks
40%Mussel, Nautilus, Scallop and Urchin
  1. Wild Leeks, for example, have 34 outdoor spots with about 20 out at a time. A plant you leave alone stays until the end of its season and blocks another spot from appearing. Shellfish are the scarcest: only 6 of the 16 Mussel spots are out at once.
  2. Seasons. Most plants only grow in certain seasons (listed below). When the season changes, the ones that no longer belong vanish overnight. On the first morning of each season every spot of every in-season species is ready to appear — it’s the best foraging day of the season. The exception is the mushrooms of the four fairy rings in the Ochre Woods, which grow all year.
  3. Skills and tools that help:
    1. Eye of the Wildcrafter removes the share limit above: every morning, every spot whose time is up comes back. It helps most with shellfish, and changes nothing for Feathered Shroom, Fiddlehead, Sorrowspore or Cut Grass. Route on the Ability tree page.
    2. Duplification gives a 30% chance of picking two instead of one. It works on shellfish and Cut Grass but not berry bushes.
    3. Carrying the Shears gives you a chance of seeds from some plants (see Crops & seeds).
    4. Farm Merchant adds 10% to the sale price of wild Gloomroot, Amber Dragon, Lavender, Stinging Nettle, Blueberries and Ember Hearts, because the game files them as crops. Other wild finds don’t get the bonus.

Every wild plant

  1. Regrowth is how long a spot stays empty before it can come back. Prices are base sell values.

Mushrooms

  1. Most mushrooms grow in the pine woods around your garden and Bristlecone’s House — the Whittled Pines on the map — so you can check them on the way to class. Morel is the easiest to find all year. Death Cap, Inky Cap and Sunset Amanita have only a few spots, all in those woods.
  2. What they’re for:
    1. Morel: Instagrow and Mushroom Dumplings.
    2. Chanterelle and Porcino: Mushroom Dumplings.
    3. Feathered Shroom and Porcino: the Woodland Dragon Habitat needs 2 Feathered Shroom and 3 Porcino (see Crafting).
    4. Ghost Shroom: the Potion of the Mole, which you need for the molehills.
    5. Death Cap, Inky Cap and Sunset Amanita: no recipe uses them — sell them for 25 each.
  1. Fairy ring mushrooms. Each ring in the Ochre Woods has 5 Chanterelle, 5 Porcino, 5 Morel and 3 Feathered Shroom spots. They grow in every season, and these rings are the only place to find Chanterelle and Porcino. They appear as Codrin’s “Fairy Ring” moves along:
  2. How the rings open up:
    1. Rescue Codrin and seal that ring with Song of Earth (see Songs & spells).
    2. The next day, walk into your dorm room: Codrin has spotted mushrooms where the ring used to be, and three more rings appear in the Ochre Woods.
    3. Seal the others with Song of Earth. Mushrooms grow from the morning after each seal, and sealing the last one also brings out Fairy Royalty.

Herbs and greens

  1. Wild Leeks and Dandelion are everywhere in the woods by your garden in Spring, and Fiddlehead grows all year. Lavender and Viperwort have a few spots between your garden and Freshman Pier; Stinging Nettle grows there and in the Rosewheat Fields. Wild Thyme turns up at Marywild’s Manor, north of Wisk and in the Cypress Foothills.
  2. Wild Mint only grows in the Shifting Spires, the mountains you reach by Gondola. The Gondola is overgrown until you use Insta Ungrow in “The Beekeeper’s Bees” (see Potions).
  3. What they’re for:
    1. Wild Leeks: Veggie Hand Pie and Pickles.
    2. Fiddlehead: Instagrow, Forest Galette and Pickles.
    3. Wild Thyme: the Potion of Befuddlement for “Fairy Ring”, the Griffin Habitat and Herbed Focaccia.
    4. Wild Mint: the Griffin Habitat and Herbed Focaccia. The habitat takes 5 Wild Thyme, 5 Wild Mint and 5 Thistle.
    5. Lavender: the Spore Neutralizer and Lavender Loaf.
    6. Stinging Nettle: Forest Galette and Pickles.
    7. Dandelion: Dandelion Cookie.
    8. Viperwort: Herbed Focaccia — though at 40 Gold Petals it’s usually better sold.

Flowers and roots

  1. Valuable, and most only appear in one or two seasons: Amber Dragon in Summer; Witchfire and Dread Sorrel in Summer and Autumn; Gloomroot, Ruby Bells and Frostleaf in Winter. All of them regrow in 3 days.
  2. What they’re for:
    1. Amber Dragon: the Potion of the Mole, all five of Theo’s toys and Amber Dragon Crumble (see Crafting).
    2. Witchfire: the Vested Pack Owl Habitat (5 Witchfire and 5 Dread Sorrel), the Potion of Fungal Transmutation and Herbed Focaccia.
    3. Dread Sorrel: the Vested Pack Owl Habitat, the Potion of Speed and Sorrel Flatbread.
    4. Ruby Bells: the Root Strengthener Tonic for the Winter Practical, Fire Art Potion 1 and Ruby Bell Pastry.
    5. Frostleaf: the Root Strengthener Tonic (2 per potion) and Herbed Focaccia.
    6. Gloomroot: Fire Art Potion 2 and Baked Gloomroot.

Beachcombing

  1. Mussel, Scallop, Urchin and Nautilus turn up all year on the Freshman Pier beach and by the Shell, south of the Rosewheat Fields. Only 40% of the spots are out at once, so walk the whole beach.
  2. What they’re for:
    1. Mussel: the Munchitis Treatment.
    2. Nautilus and Urchin: the Potion of Healing.
    3. All four pickle into Pickles of the Sea, which sell for 35 — nearly double a Nautilus or Scallop and over three times a Mussel or Urchin (see Recipes).
  3. Seaweed, Seastar and the other sea ingredients come from diving (see Collectibles).

Berry bushes

  1. There are 34 wild bushes on the island, and each one gives a different fruit every season:

Ember HeartsAutumn55Berry Custard
Winter BerryWinter10Winter Berry Biscuit
  1. A picked bush fruits again 4 days later, and each season is separate: pick a bush’s blackberries on the last day of Summer and it will have Ember Hearts on the first day of Autumn. Every berry can go into a Pickled Fruit Medley.
  2. You’ll find bushes at the entrance to your garden, in the woods by Bristlecone’s House, around Linden’s farm, in the Ochre Woods and by the frog pond east of Marywild’s Manor.

Bellian Moor

  1. The moor opens on the Summer 7 class trip and stays open afterwards — go back from the edge of the Etchery Courtyard where the trip started. It’s the only place with Pixie Cup and Thistle, and has extra Wild Thyme:
  2. On the moor:
    1. Thistle, 10 spots: the Griffin Habitat and Thistle Cupcake.
    2. Pixie Cup, 8 spots, 35 each. The Potionmaster needs one.
    3. Wild Thyme, 7 spots.
  3. There are also three wild Honey Bees, and the Briar Foxes here can be adopted (see Collectibles).

Cut Grass

  1. Equip the Scythe (Kavita, 65) and cut the long grass in your garden and around Freshman Pier. Each clump costs 3 mana and gives 1 Cut Grass. It grows back in 5 days, but never right next to something you’ve planted, so your crops stay clear.
  2. You need Cut Grass for the Potion of Hardiness (2 each), the Trellis (20) and the Woodland Dragon Habitat (40). The Potionmaster asks for one too.

The Potionmaster’s Ingredients

  1. The Potionmaster’s list uses old names for six ingredients. Ask Professor Rohesia, the Librarian or Professor Sylvine about Arcane Ingredients to get the Arcane Botany Book, which translates them:

Best finds for money

  1. Worth the walk:
    1. Spring and Autumn berries: Blueberries and Ember Hearts are worth 55 each, the same as farmed blueberries. All 34 bushes together come to about 1,870 Gold Petals, and you can do it again every 4 days.
    2. Gloomroot in Winter: 100 each, the most valuable wild ingredient. Its 14 spots regrow in 3 days, and Baked Gloomroot sells for 140.
    3. Amber Dragon and Viperwort in Summer: 45 and 40, both back in 3 days.
    4. Pixie Cup: 35 all year — grab them whenever you’re on Bellian Moor.
    5. Pickle the cheap stuff. Fiddlehead, Wild Leeks, Stinging Nettle and shellfish are worth 5–15 raw and 35 as pickles (see Recipes).
