Every battle asks for a minimum military strength and allows a set number of squads. Strength is a score built from your hired troops and the defences you have stored — not from swords in your bag. Below is every fight in route order, followed by what each source of strength is worth.

Where strength comes from
| Source | Strength | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mercenaries, starting gear | 8 | Only while paid. A win clears the payment and the fee rises. |
| Mercenaries, iron upgrade | 16 | 3 Iron Ingots, after the first southern outpost win. |
| Mercenaries, steel upgrade | 24 | 3 Steel Ingots; steel comes from the Bishop (Phase 10). |
| Barricade I | 2 each | Built at the Barracks building desk and stored until a battle. |
| Zombie fighters | 1 to 7 each | Four per squad. Each adds its armour’s value plus its pike’s or bow’s: bronze armour and Light Pike +1 each, iron versions +2, steel +3. |
| Other defences | See the preparation screen | Better barricades and archer towers. |
Military research
- Barricades and towers come from the red/green research tree. These are the ones that matter for battles:
| Research | Cost | Needs | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple Barricades | 60 red, 25 green | Reinforced Plank | Barricade I, Spiked Barricade I, Fortified Barricade I |
| Archers Tower | 60 red, 25 green | Simple Barricades | Archer Tower I, a larger military building area |
| Robust Barricades | 90 red, 30 green | Reinforced Beam | Barricade II and its spiked and fortified versions |
| Archers Tower II | 100 red, 50 green | Robust Barricades | Archer Tower II |
| Reinforced Barricades | 150 red, 75 green | Steel Smithing | Barricade III and its spiked and fortified versions |
| Archers Tower III | 160 red, 80 green | Reinforced Barricades | Archer Tower III |
- The Reinforced Plank research itself asks for 20 Herbert reputation — the reason Phase 1’s graveyard report matters so early.
How a battle plays
- The flow is the same every time:
- Talk to the guards at the battle camp and choose Start Battle. You need a sword and body armour equipped.
- In the preparation phase, use the battlefield building menu to place your stored defences across the routes to your base. Retreat here cancels and sends you back outside.
- Carry a squad’s banner to lead it and drop it where the squad should hold.
- The bars at the top of the screen show when and from where the next wave arrives.
- Flags are taken by clearing the zombies around them and standing close; the more of your troops nearby, the quicker it turns.
- A lost battle can be retried. Before trying again, move your defences to the route that broke through, and stay with your squads rather than fighting alone at the front.
