The opening is a straight line: there are no choices of order yet. It is, however, full of small traps — an item you must equip rather than carry, a stash you can walk past, a sign you have to install. The one thing to remember from this phase is to take everything from the wall stash: two of those items open doors much later.
Checklist
| Step | Done when |
|---|---|
| Free Larry | The sarcophagus breaks and Larry joins you. |
| Empty the wall stash | You hold the dungeon key, the King’s signet and the Inquisitor’s medallion. |
| Reach the shelter | You have slept in the building by the blocked bridge. |
| Escape through the sewers | You leave by the sewer exit with the scout. |
| Get armed | Both rusty pieces worn, not just carried. |
| Pass the village gate | The guards let your group stay. |
| First burial | The grave is filled and its Wooden Sign installed. |
| Show Herbert the certificate | Herbert has seen the Burial Certificate. |
| Sell the certificate | Januarius has bought it at the tavern. |
| Meet Herm | Herm has asked about food and the borrowed fishing rod. |
The dungeon
- Let Soul finish talking. She snaps one chain; the other is yours to deal with. Walking away does nothing — interact with the chain repeatedly (Larry cheers you on) until it gives.
- Grab the Rusty Pickaxe lying nearby, press Tab for the inventory and left-click it once to equip it.
- You are too hungry to work on Larry’s sarcophagus. Grab a Brown Mushroom and eat it from the inventory: +25 Energy.
- Hack at the sarcophagus with the pickaxe until it breaks. Follow Larry and clear the rubble that blocks this part of the prison, then walk into the area beyond.
- The exit needs a key. Read the Inquisitor’s note on the table: it mentions a hidden stash in the wall. Inspect the stash and take all three items — the Key from the Inquisition dungeon, the King’s signet and the Inquisitor’s medallion.
- Use the exit and let Larry talk. You come out on Crown Hill, still inside the Town walls.
Crown Hill and the scout
- Follow the road to a wooden barricade. Larry suggests an axe: pick up the axe nearby, equip it (the pickaxe won’t do) and chop the barricade down.
- Ignore the gated street that leads to the palace and head for the square. At the next barricade a stranger stands on the far side: interact, choose Ask Larry for help, and accept that this one can’t be broken. Larry’s “translation” is not reliable directions.
- Take the other road to the bridge. It’s blocked too, so go into the building with the large door instead.
- Inside, interact with the cheese first — that makes the bed usable — then sleep. No fire, no fuel: keeping a low profile is the point.
- A bell wakes you and a scout drops through the roof. Leave by the side exit and keep the axe in hand: he wants the outhouse outside demolished. Break it completely, then follow him into the sewers.
- Down there, don’t stop to fight the zombies — the goal is the exit. Leave the sewers to end the escape.
Defending the Town
- Herbert, head of the guards, eyes your loot suspiciously, but the approaching zombies come first. He sends you to the workshop: ask Jack, the Workshop Foreman, for armor and a sword.
- When the armor reaches the output chest and Jack asks whether you’re impressed, answer Sarcasm. Take the Rusty Armor and Rusty Sword from the chest and equip both — the exit won’t let you leave with them in your bag.
- Outside, choose Accept the promotion. Herbert gives you a squad for the right flank: pick up the banner from its stand (carrying it is how your soldiers follow you), and use Place banner at a barricade to station them there.
- During the retreat, the gate guards refuse to let anyone in. When Larry hints at it, choose Look, I come from the Inquisition! — this needs the medallion. Then either demand or politely ask that they open the gates; both use the signet and get the same answer.
- Your group may stay, but you still need permission to enter the village itself.
A roof, a grave and a certificate
- Herbert wants a graveyard set up and promises bodies in the morning, with burial certificates as proof. Head west of the Crossroads to the abandoned Inquisitor base — don’t try the village yet.
- At the ruined church, Larry picks spots for the graveyard and morgue. Answer Make a joke., follow him to the hut and go in. Put Larry on the box by the bed when he asks, then sleep.
- A bell announces Donkey with a delivery. This morning also unlocks A New Beginning and the technology tree.
- At the morgue, pick up the body and carry it inside. Place it on the autopsy table, open the table once, then close it — no need to remove anything for the tutorial. Take the body off again and carry it to the graveyard.
- Answer We should show some respect., then empty the chest: Rusty Shovel, Rusty Hammer, three Wooden Signs and a Cheese. Equip the shovel.
- At the graveyard building desk, choose a grave and mark a spot. Put the body down, dig the hole, place the body inside and shovel the earth back. Pick up the Burial Certificate.
- Before leaving, open the filled grave, choose the empty headstone slot and install a Wooden Sign — Larry won’t let you go until it’s actually in place. Keep the other two signs.
- Show the certificate to Herbert at the Crossroads with Show the burial certificate. He only looks at it, so keep it. He points you to Januarius at the village tavern and asks you to cheer the guards up with a nicer graveyard — that can wait for Phase 1. This conversation also lifts the village entry ban.
The tavern and Herm
- In the Village Tavern, let the scene with Jack and the village leaders play out. Talk to Januarius: he buys burial certificates, and the talk turns to fairies when he calls Jully. Answer Defend your honor when Jully challenges you. Januarius then explains the village is short of food and firewood. The trade tutorial unlocks Two faces.
- Choose Trade and sell the certificate — this is the actual payment.
- At Herm’s store, let his chat with Jack finish, then ask about the food shortage. Herm wants free samples of anything you grow — but you buy the seeds. Pick Other ways to help?: the twins borrowed his fishing rod and never returned it.
